The Official Findings:
The Hot Hand® Puppet is a one size fits all double-ended silicone rubber mitt with a ‘quick fit’ pocket at each end; one for the thumb and one for the other fingers. Concaved tipped studs on the surface provide a secure grip. It can withstand temperatures as high as 260°C (500°F) and remains flexible at temperatures as low as -57°C (-70°F) making it ideal for common lab needs like removing items from an autoclave or handling dry ice.
The Sock Puppet is a one size fits all cotton, polyester tube in which a thumb must be forced for a lower jaw. Gripping surface does not come with all models. It will catch on fire at 260°C (500°F) and will become part of your hand at temperatures as low as -57°C (-70°F). It is not recommended for removing items from autoclaves or even toaster ovens and should not be used when handling common variety refrigerator ice.
